FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT AM I BUYING?

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

Your €1 is a donation. In return, you become one of the Million Strangers and receive your Stranger number.

We considered pretending there was more to it.

There isn't.

WHY €1?

Because €10 starts to require serious consideration.

€1 felt like an amount people might spend just to see what happens.

Also:

€1 = 1 Stranger.

No bulk discounts. No buying ten Strangers. No billionaire skipping us straight to the ending.

One person. One euro. One Stranger.

IS THIS REAL?

Unfortunately, yes.

A surprising amount of software has now been written to ask strangers on the internet for one euro.

IS THIS A SCAM?

No.

We're unusually clear about the deal:

You send €1.

You don't receive a product, investment, financial return or ownership in anything.

You receive a Stranger number and become part of the experiment.

Whether that's worth €1 is entirely up to you.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?

Some goes to payment fees and taxes.

The rest goes to the stranger who had this stupid idea.

Maybe some of it pays off my mortgage.

If Million Strangers ever becomes much bigger than reasonably expected, there's a serious possibility of using part of what remains for something good — ideally something the Strangers themselves can have a say in.

But we're not making promises about money we haven't received from people we haven't met yet.

CAN I GIVE MORE THAN €1?

No.

Well, technically we're sure you'd find a way to send someone more money on the internet.

But not here.

€1 = 1 Stranger.

That's the experiment.

CAN I BECOME A STRANGER MORE THAN ONCE?

The intention is one person, one Stranger.

Please don't attempt to become an entire neighborhood.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I PAY?

You receive your Stranger number and a personal way to invite other people.

If another person joins through you, their dot becomes connected to yours in the network.

Congratulations.

You have now recruited a stranger for a project with no sensible explanation.

WHAT ARE ALL THE DOTS?

Us.

Each dot represents a Stranger.

When one Stranger brings in another, a line connects them.

We don't invent connections. If someone arrived without another Stranger referring them, they're simply another lonely little dot on the internet.

CAN PEOPLE SEE WHO I AM?

No.

The public experiment is about Strangers, not identities.

Your public presence in the network is your Stranger number. We don't display your name, email or payment information on the network.

You're supposed to be a stranger.

WHO MADE THIS?

A Stranger.

The person behind Million Strangers is deliberately staying a Stranger too.

If Stranger #1,000,000 ever arrives, I'll tell you who started it.

Until then, we're all strangers here.

WHAT HAPPENS AT 1,000,000?

We genuinely have no idea.

Reaching one million strangers seemed unlikely enough to postpone that decision.

There are worse problems to have.

IS THIS FOR CHARITY?

No.

Million Strangers is not currently a charity fundraiser.

If this grows into something genuinely substantial, using part of it to do something good is a serious idea.

But we're not going to turn a vague future intention into a noble-sounding promise just to convince you to send €1.

For now, it's exactly what it says it is.

CAN I GET MY EURO BACK?

This is a donation, not a refundable purchase.

So don't send the euro if you're going to miss it.

WHY WOULD I DO THIS?

That's probably the most sensible question on this page.

We don't have a sensible answer.

Maybe because you want to see how far it goes.

Maybe because someone you know sent you here.

Maybe because being Stranger #12,483 sounds strangely appealing.

Maybe because it's one euro.

Or maybe because you're thinking:

This is idiotic. I want in.

That's good enough for us.
